By the time she was referred to Access Now volunteer Dr. Brennan J. Carmody last August, Mary Fletcher was in bad shape.
"She was dying of malnutrition," recalls Carmody, who specializes in bariatric and laparoscopic surgery at Commonwealth Surgeons, part of Bon Secours Medical Group at St. Mary’s Hospital. "She was like a skeleton, and her protein levels were significantly depressed."
It had been a long, hard couple of years for the Goochland county resident. In mid-2010, the Great Recession cost her husband his construction job of nearly 20 years. As a result, they both lost their health insurance. Their problems multiplied and when they lacked the income to pay their home mortgage, they lost their house as well.
