Letter from Carolyn Thomas
As we begin our fourth year of Access Now, I want to thank you again for your support of this program.
Our network of physicians and physician extenders, along with their staffs, continues to give a wonderful
gift to the Central Virginia region. The support of our partner clinics, the hospital systems, visiting
nurses, and suppliers of durable medical goods and pharmaceuticals has enabled this program of
providing care to the uninsured and financially disadvantaged to work. The financial and volunteer
support of our individual, business, and foundation donors has made possible this gift of healing to
those who previously have lacked ready access to specialty medical care.
A "Transformational" Grant
In late 2010, Access Now was honored to receive a $200,000 grant through the Bank of America Charitable Foundation's Neighborhood Excellence Initiative. It was one only two Neighborhood Builder awards from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Inc.
As Deborah Love, Access Now's executive director, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch, "Our total operational budget for 2010 was $290,000. When we get $200,000 ... it's transformational. It's our largest grant ever. It came at the right time for the right reasons."
The Face of Courage
Lindsey Garrett knows what it's like to stare possible disfigurement in the face. Fortunately, she's also experienced the power of healing. Today, Garrett is a
bright, attractive and articulate 27-year-old professional looking forward to a
long, successful, and entertaining life.
But her future looked murky last September 20, when she arrived to have surgery performed by Dr. Alan J. Burke, an Access Now volunteer physician at Virginia Ear, Nose and Throat in Henrico County.
Breaking Down Barriers
Throughout her career as a breast cancer researcher, Dr. Ellen Shaw de Paredes has always made access to health care a top priority. So it only seems natural that she has teamed up with the physician volunteers, clinics and hospitals that make up the Access Now network of care.
Her Ellen Shaw de Paredes Research Foundation's primary goal, she says, is "education and research and care of underserved individuals."
The Board of Directors and staff of Access Now wish to offer our sincere thanks for the tireless work, generous donations and unswerving dedication to our volunteer physicians, donors and health care partners, including:
- Bon Secours Richmond Health System
- HCA Virginia Health System
